Guacamole is one of my favorite things. Easy to make and great on scrambled eggs, roasted veggies, a veggie sandwich, slow cooked beef tacos, and vegetarian tacos. I also love pairing guacamole with other sauces like this crema that is also made with avocado. Itโ€™s also great with a beef taco skillet.

When making guacamole yourself is this easy, there is no need to buy it already made. If you like home cooking using the freshest of ingredients, then youโ€™ve come to the right place! I love using fresh produce and helping you find useful and creative ways to get the most of your grocery store or Farmers Market haul.

How To Choose The Best Ingredients For Guacamole

This guacamole has a couple of ingredients you may not expect- salsa verde and lime zest! The salsa adds a nice kick of extra flavor, while the lime zest helps this recipe to be more lime forward, which I really think youโ€™ll love. Weโ€™re already using the lime juice, why throw away that perfectly good zest?

Pro Tip:

I have found through years of making my own guacamole that adding lime zest along with lime juice keeps your guacamole green longer than using juice by itself! Iโ€™ve tested this and found it to be true.

Here are some tips for selecting the best quality items for your guacamole:

Avocados- Avoid avocados that are really soft to the touch or feel mushy. If youโ€™re making this right away, you want them to give just a touch when you squeeze them. If you know youโ€™re not making your guacamole for a couple of days, you can buy some that are more firm, they will soften with time. Just keep an eye on them though, and make that guacamole when they start feeling softer.

Salsa Verde- Use homemade salsa verde for this recipe! It really does add some terrific depth. My version uses roasted tomatillos, and the salsa ingredients are roasted right on a sheet pan! Making the salsa verde used in this recipe not only ensures maximum flavor, but itโ€™s a great way to use up produce at the same time.

Cilantro- I know this ingredient has its lovers and its haters. You can leave it out if you prefer. When buying cilantro, look for bunches that donโ€™t have any mushy, rotting, or browning leaves. If you garden and grow your own, even better!

Lime- Donโ€™t skip this! It is a key ingredient. Weโ€™ll be using the juice and the zest, so nothing is going to waste here! If you have some extra limes left over, make these cute little mojito cheesecakes for dessert!

Amyโ€™s Tips for Making The Best Guacamole With Salsa Verde and Lime

Like I said, Iโ€™ve been making guacamole myself for ages and Iโ€™ve got lots of tips to share with you!

Flavor Control- Do you want a spicy guacamole? Feel free to chop up a Jalapeno (or two) and add them in. Want it even hotter? Go with Serrano! To deepen the flavor of the chiles, you can dice them up and saute them in a non-stick skillet to get a little browning on them before adding them to the guacamole. I know this works because I do it sometimes when I want it spicier.

This is a lime forward guacamole thanks to the added lime zest. If you know you donโ€™t want a stronger lime flavor, you can leave out the zest.

Texture- Guacamole can be chunky or smooth. I happen to be team chunky! I just like the textural balance it brings.

Be sure to see the recipe card notes for making a smoother guacamole if you prefer that.

This easy guacamole with salsa verde and lime blends creamy avocado with tangy tomatillo salsa and fresh lime for a bold, restaurant-worthy dip at home. This is the fresh twist your chips have been waiting for! Ready in minutes and impossible to stop eating.

  • Total Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients

Scale

3 medium or 2 large Avocados

1 teaspoon of Salt

1/2 teaspoon of Pepper

Zest and Juice from 1 Lime

1/3 cup of Salsa Verde

1/3 cup of chopped Red Onion

1/2 cup of chopped Cilantro

Instructions

  1. Zest and juice the lime. Cut the avocados in half and remove the pits. Scoop the flesh out into a medium sized bowl. Use a spoon, fork, or potato masher to break up the avocado, still leaving some chunks.
  2. Add the 1 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of pepper and stir.ย
  3. Place the lime juice and lime zest in the bowl and stir them in.
  4. Next, add the 1/3 cup of salsa verde to the avocado and stir to combine.
  5. Dice the red onion until you have 1/3 of a cup and stir into the mixture.
  6. Chop the cilantro until you have 1/2 cup and add it to the guacamole and stir.
  7. Your guacamole is ready, enjoy!

Notes

If you want your guacamole to have a smoother texture, use a potato masher to break up the avocado until it is smooth.ย

The cilantro can be left out if you prefer.

How To Keep Your Guacamole Green

The lime juice and zest will help keep it from browning. Storing your guacamole properly also helps with this. To store, place a piece of plastic wrap over the top of the guacamole and press down so the plastic wrap is touching the whole surface of the guacamole. Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

I’ve tested this, and the lime zest does add a day or two of storage time over just using lime juice.
